Mrs. Izfar's First Grade Class

Ms. Cardona led our class through a Reader's Theater exercise today! Reader's Theater is an activity in which students, while reading directly from scripts, are able to tell a story without props, costumes, or sets. This is a reading activity and students are not asked to memorize their lines. They are, however, encouraged to "ham it up" and use intonation and gestures appropriate to their characters and their characters' words. Readers Theater provides repeated reading practice, an important factor in building fluency.

Thank you parents and students for participating in our science event yesterday! I was excited to see so many Herrera students visit the station that I helped facilitate, "Huff and Puff." Students had the opportunity to test their lungs and make observations about the force of air. Please visit podcasts to view a clip of the experiment!

This week in the writing workshop we began our unit of study on poetry. You will be amazed by the writing your children can do in this unit - they are able to create poems with so much more weight and power than the rhyming jingles we often imagine young children’s poetry to be! We will start by looking at the world through the eyes of a poet - examining objects closely, and trying to see them in fresh, interesting ways.

April is National Poetry Month! We've started writing poems in Writing Workshop and are eager to share our first efforts with you! I have uploaded a video of Khai reciting a poem in podcasts. Please check our website often, as I will update the content on a regular basis.

Welcome Back! 03/28/2008

Welcome back! I hope you all had a safe and restful Spring Break! We are very lucky to have a University of Houston student teacher joining us this week. Ms. Jessica Cardona will work with our class until late April.
